Suitable for both past students and beginners, our One Day Damascus workshop will take you through the process of refining a billet of Damascus into a knife to call your own. Our experienced bladesmith will walk you through the process of designing, creating, and finishing the billet into a kitchen or hunting knife of your choice*.

Do you get to use the forge? Yes. Do you get to hammer hot steel? Yes. Can you ask for help if it’s harder than you thought? Absolutely! Our One Day Damascus Steel workshop is designed to give you the beauty of a Damascus steel knife, but without all of the hard work required to make your own billet. It’s perfect for those who are curious about Damascus steel but aren’t ready to take the plunge of spending two full days in the studio.

Course Outline:

In this workshop, which revolves around the stock removal method, students will:

• Choose a knife shape that they would like to make: kitchen or hunting style knife
• Learn about the different steels used to create Damascus
• Learn about the process of creating a Damascus billet using layers of 1084/1075 and 15N20 steels, which have been fusion welded together, ready for forging
• Learn about and be involved in the forging process
• Learn about full-tang and hidden-tang knives
• Learn how, through the process of forging, folding/twisting, a totally unique pattern is created in the steel.
• Heat treat and temper the knife
• Using the stock removal method, cut and then shape a knife blade to your own design, style and size
• Etch the blade to bring out the Damascus pattern
• Choose handle material and make and fit the handle
• Learn how to sharpen and care for the knife long term
• Take home a completed Damascus knife
