Two Day Damascus Steel Knifemaking Workshop

Would you like to spend two full days in the Studio, learning the art of making Damascus knives? This workshop is your ticket.

Suitable for both past students and beginners, our Two Day Damascus workshop will provide you with a very hands-on experience of creating a stunning piece of Damascus steel and turning it into a knife of your own.

With the help of our experienced bladesmith you will design, create and finish a kitchen or hunting knife of your choice.*

Do you get to use the forge? Yes. Do you get to hammer hot steel? Yes. Can you ask for help if it’s harder than you thought? Absolutely you can! This workshop provides the opportunity for you to full-engage with the process but you have the support of the bladesmith with you every step of the way.

Course Outline:

During your two days in our Studio you will:

• Learn about the different steels used to create Damascus
• Learn about, and be directly involved in, the process of creating a Damascus billet using layers of 1084/1075 and 15N20 steels, which are then welded together, ready for forging
• Learn about, and be directly involved in, the process of forging, heat-treating, and tempering a knife
• Learn about full-tang and hidden-tang knives
• Use the forge to heat and then fusion-weld the billet for your knife, then fold/twist the billet to create a pattern in the steel
• Use the press/power hammer to flatten your billet
• Shape and then grind the blade on your knife
• Etch the blade in acid to bring out the Damascus pattern
• Choose handle material and learn to prepare, fit and shape a handle for your knife
• Learn how to sharpen and care for your knife
• Take home a completed knife
